Can anyone advise. My kids are grown. I want to retire in Mexico. I am a combat veteran and have disability pension and will have Retirment pension along with disability social security. I am familiar with Puerto Penasco from yrs back and I loved it. I am just looking for a small historical sea town that has an open seafood vegetable market with a low cost of living. I want to avoid tourists. I prefer a town where a car is not needed most of the time. Can anyone make any suggestions other than Puerto Penasco? Muy agradecido

Interesting that I found this. I too am a combat disabled vet on social security and I've lived in Rocky Point for 10 years. While I do have a car and a quad, most of my transport is with a bike and there's videos of me riding around town. My YouTube is crazyoldringo. I confess costs of living is a bit unique, but if pressed I could do it on $500.00 a month. My hard static expenses is $250.00 or so. The rest is for travel, fun whatever. Some people treat this like a permanent vacation. You'll find the same old birds sitting at the American legion day in day out, maybe move to another bar. You can do that anywhere and get in trouble. I'm a block from the beach, but that makes this a tourist town, but honestly, I don't see them much. I wake up every day happy and stress free.

I’m. So happy to have found this thread. I, too am a single femal veteran whose last child just left home and now I’m just really considering the idea of moving to Mexico. I grew up in a base town in Southern Arizona and spent a lot of time there and also traveled there a lot as an adult. I wouldn’t mind living in a tourist town as meeting new people is fun for me and I’m just chatty by nature and I LONG to live on the beach. So I’ve been looking at houses all along the Texas Gulf but they’re SO expensive and cost of living just keeps getting higher as my small income of VA disability and social security disability stay the same.

If you come to the Rio Grande Valley you’ll be close to Mexico and close to the beach. Winter Texans have been coming here for years. You’ll find trailer parks or other inexpensive neighborhoods. Summers can be hot though.

In Rocky Point the cost are rising, but if pressed, I could live on $500.00 a month. $1,000.00 if not. We are of course 1 hour from the border if there is a medical emergency. Many resort towns now have medical facilities with Lake View Group which takes Medicare Advantage in cases of emergency. There's an abundance to take you to the border where another will pick you up. Ajo, 2 hours away has a clinic that accepts all insurances if you don't trust Mexican doctors. No reason not to.

The American Legion here does a mail run to Lukeville PO once a week. You can get mail, prescriptions and Amazon pretty cheaply.

Super Walmart is being built, done by Thanksgiving I think, Sam's already here.

My Mexican car insurance is $100.00 a year. I cancelled my Arizona registration and insurance. If I need to go to the VA for annual check ups, there's two shuttles that come and go daily. Generally though VA is like others, telemedicine or calls.

I ride my bike from one end of town to the other and generally get it all done. Spend maybe $20.00 in gas a month.

Plenty of good doctors and dentists that are cheap. I'm 67, in great health but I figure that won't last. I'm in for the long haul. Been here 10 years.
