US/UK dual citizen, from NYC and LA but living in Central Mexico right now. Looking to move to in early 2026. I have narrowed search to Bayonne, Bordeaux, La Rochelle. Looking online for rentals is all consuming. Would love to speak with a knowledgeable local rental agent to learn with is realistic in of a 2 or 3 bedroom apartment or house, does not need to be city center, could be suburb with easy public transport. I walk and bike a lot. Need ground floor or elevator as my 99 year old dad will visit. I like the idea of a gites for a few months while we find a more permanent home. Budget is under 1300 euros. I realize that agents' fees can be high but this is one area I may consider spending the money, for expertise and peace of mind. Any recommendations or referrals are welcome. Merci en advance.

One thing to understand about looking for a place to live in is that the way rental agents work may be very different from what you're used to (certainly in the US). Unless you're working with a real relocation agent (who is helping you with all the many aspects of making an international move), you'll probably need to make one or several reconnaissance visits to to work face to face with more than one rental agent.

There is also the issue of what sort of visa you'll be coming to on. Your income determines pretty much how much you're able to pay in rent (i.e. you normally need to show at least 3 times the rent in regular income) and it helps immensely to already have a French bank established (ideally, showing the regular deposit of said income each month).

Thanks, this is VERY helpful info. Coming as retiree on long term stay visa. That three times the rent might be a challenge in year 1 and 2. By year three, no issue. So I may have to postpone. :-(
