Hello everyone! I'm new to this site. I have been living in Nancy for about 1.5 years in total. Recently married to a lovely Frenchman. I am finding it difficult to make friends here though. The covid situation certainly doesn't make things easy, but I'm finding that the due to cultural differences, the French are a little more private than Americans and don't tend to make friends as easily. Anyways, so far its been good, but I am hoping to connect with someone in my area. Reply if you are nearby and have any advice or are interested 😊

I hope you get a response, but you are in an area where there a few anglophone expats. Once the pandemic is past, I suggest you consider ing associations or on va sortir, which would help you to make friends with French people, and possibly also anglophones.

Good luck.

One big difference in cultures is that the French have a tendency to do much of their socializing within their own families. (The pandemic is really hurting folks in that dimension, too.)

You may want to check out the AVF in Nancy. Local - Nancy It's a French organization for newcomers to an area and very often the AVF groups have some sort of English language activity - whether to allow the English speaking expats to get involved in the group, or to provide a chance for the French folks to "practice their English" in some manner. As an English speaking newcomer and expat it's a real easy way to ingratiate yourself into the group if you offer to "help out" with whatever English language activities they have going. Or, just the group and after getting your bearings for a couple of months, offer to host an English language "conversation group" or book group or something that interests you and allows the other to practice their language skills.

Right now, many of the AVF groups are either dormant or are running a very limited array of activities. They usually shut down (as does all of ) over the school holidays in the summer, but if you can either catch the end of this season or catch up with them at the Rentrée in the fall, it's a good way to meet people - especially French folks who speak English and want to practice with you. And I see that the group in Nancy has some outdoor activities that can get you started.

Bonjour. My name is Sonea. I have recently travelled to Nancy as well from the U.K and can very well understand that it can be difficult to find other English speaking people to connect with properly. As people have mentioned on this thread, I suppose we would do well to see what our local community has to offer us, if they are still running. I too, have found with the pandemic, it can be challenging. Of course, I would be glad to speak to you and meet sometime in the near future perhaps, if you wish, as I am in Nancy.

Kind Regards

Sonea

Hi. I have been living in Nancy with my daughter and her family since 2019. The American Library in Nancy meets on Zoom every Mondays and Thursdays for general chat. They have other programs on zoom also. You can email them at: [email protected]. Let me know if you are able to reach someone.
