I know this isn't a book but if you have Netflix there's a very good series about Franco entiltled ‘The Brutal Truth About Spain’s Dictator’. Paul Preston appears in it a lot.

I saw the series. Carmen Polo who was from Oviedo is legendary here for her tendency to shop and not pay for the goods. I always thought that was kind of an Urban Legend in Oviedo until it was mentioned in the series.

I found the series to bo a good outline of Franco's career.

We watched the Netflix doc. The Brutal Truth....absolutely gave us a greater understanding of Spain and what the people went through- Franco lived so long!
Before coming to Spain I read Iabel Allende's book. "A Long Petal Of The Sea", which was really packed with history and detail-a good story. I really like the Spanish author Javier Marias and the book so far enjoyed the most "a Heart So White". I am thinking of getting a dual language book Spanish/ English, there are some good titles now and as this process worked well for me when I was learning French...

I look forward to reading it Alcalaina. Just had delivered Paul Preston's latest, The Spanish Holocaust
Try also Paul Preston's "A people betrayed" about how corruption has hindered the country.
And for a pretty current view of things in Spain, Giles Tremlett's The Ghosts of Spain". He has been The Guardian correspondent for Spain many years now & knows the country well.

Just got done reading ¨The Road to Revolution in Spain: The Coal Miners of Asturias, 1860 to 1934¨ by Adrian Shubert. The book details the events leading up to the Revolution of October 1934 which marked the end of the Second Republic and the start of the Civil War. I really liked the book; however, I would not recommend it for a reader with just a casual interest in this time period.
